Should I sign anything when a roofer knocks on my door after a storm?

Take your time and do not sign anything at the door. Door-to-door roofing sales are legal and many of these companies are reputable, but the form you are asked to sign may be a contract that takes effect if your insurance approves a claim. Read anything you sign, keep a copy, and contact your insurance company yourself.

Why roofers go door to door

After a hailstorm, roofing companies often visit neighborhoods where storm damage is likely. This is a common way roofers find work in North Texas, and it is not a warning sign on its own.

Before you sign

A free inspection does not require a signature. A form that allows a company to contact your insurance company, or that commits you to using that company if your claim is approved, is a contract.

Read the fine print, and look for any clause that assigns your insurance payment to the contractor. If you are not ready to sign, it is fine to say no and take time to decide.

Your insurance claim

Your insurance claim is between you and your insurance company. A roofing company can inspect and document the damage and provide an estimate, but in Texas a roofing contractor cannot negotiate a claim for you.

Be cautious if someone asks for your policy number before anyone has inspected the roof.

Questions to ask

What is your company’s full legal name and business address?

Who will manage my project?

Will you give me photos of any damage you find?

Do you offer a written warranty on your work?

Can you give me references from local customers?

Related questions

Is door-to-door roofing sales legal in Texas?

Generally, yes, although many cities require a solicitation permit and some neighborhoods do not allow soliciting.

What is a contingency agreement?

A contingency agreement is a contract that takes effect if your insurance company approves your claim. These agreements are common, but they are contracts and should be read carefully before you sign.

Should I schedule my own inspection?

You can. Call a roofing company you choose, have the roof inspected, and then decide whether to file a claim.
